I have used Evernote moderately throughout the course of this semester. The organizational scheme that I used for my notebooks is a demarcation based on the class for which it is used. For example, one of the notebooks is entitled "EDC 431 Lincoln Middle School." This notebook contains the activity plans and teaching resources I used in my middle school placement.
My current PKB consists of 9 notebooks. All of the notebooks that I currently have are for school-related purposes. 7 of the 9 notebooks pertain to materials for EDC 430 and EDC 431. The topics covered in these notebooks include unit plan resources and activity plans for practicum. The remaining 2 notebooks are used for EDC 478 independent study materials. Between my individual notebooks and those that are shared with other members of the class, I currently have access to 224 notes.
One planning strategy for which I have used Evernote in order to prepare for student teaching is the gathering of materials for lesson plans. During class, I used the Internet to search for resources for my unit plan. During the course of the research process, I came across several Web pages, pictures, and videos that did not pertain to my lessons in the unit plan. They did, however, present themselves to me as things that may be useful as part of a middle or high school lesson plan in the future. I used the Evernote Web Clipper to save these Web pages and pictures so that I will have a record of these ideas for the future should I be able to use them.
In trying to use Evernote in a professional context, I have definitely come a long way from the beginning of the semester. At first, I despised the program because I found it too difficult to learn how to use and I did not have the patience to struggle with it. However, over time and with guidance from Dr. Fogleman, I have become quite adept at using the program. I now recognize the benefits of being able to have Evernote at my disposal because it is an easy way to keep everything in order and in one convenient location. I especially like being able to access the program from my laptop, iPhone, iPad, or the Internet, making all of my materials accessible to me virtually everywhere I go. The one issue that I have with Evernote is that the syncing process sometimes does not work in the manner that it should. For example, some notes or edits made to previously existing notes will appear on my laptop, but when I sync both my laptop and my phone, they will not be visible in the Evernote app for iPhone. This is a flaw of the software itself, so I understand that it is something that will have to be dealt with when it occurs, but it is irritating nevertheless. Overall, I am relatively satisfied with Evernote. I hope to be able to utilize it more in my professional career in the future.
